After a couple of intense days in London the ladies of Sofia Vokalensemble are at home again. The performance on Thursday at Royal Festival Hall was gripping, emotional and got standing ovations. This is from theartsdesk.com
“The Symphony of Psalms, which ended the Philharmonia’s Stravinsky series last night, is an indelible masterpiece, silencing the tired but persistent accusation that Stravinsky’s music is clever but cold. Abstract it may be, but suffused with an exile’s deep longing, spritual hope rising in harmonies of heart-stopping consolation until that final, revelatory C major chord. This performance (with three Swedish choirs) was of focused beauty and searing sincerity; I have never heard better. Its radical scoring sounded afresh, while spine-tingling intonation and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen’s unforced mastery lent the whole a visionary power.”
We are very happy and grateful to have taken part of this fantastic production together with Orphei Drängar, ladies of Gustaf Sjökvists Kammarkör, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Peter Sellars. BBC Radio 3 sent the concert live and it’s online for another month.
This summer the sopranos and altos performed Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms together with the Orphei Drängar and ladies of Gustaf Sjökvists Kammarkör during the renowned opera festival in Aix-en-Provence, France. This week we get to meet and work with director Peter Sellars, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and his Philarmonia Orchestra again. On September 29th we’ll be on stage in London at Royal Festival Hall!
We’re back home after a fantastic tour to our Baltic neighbors! Last night we performed in Vilnius and sang Tėvyne mūsų (Pater Noster), a beautiful piece by the Lithuanian composer Vaclovas Augustinas. This is a song that is special to many Lithuanians and we hope we made it justice.
Yesterday we in Sofia Vokalensemble had our first rehearsal after the summer break and we have an exciting autumn in front of us. In October we’ll be singing music by Pärt and Mäntyjärvi and in December we’ll perform Händel’s Messiah with orchestra and soloists.
In September the tenors and basses will be going on their own tour to the Baltics and the sopranos and altos will once more perform Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, this time in London.
If you happen to be in Stockholm on Wednesday August 24th you’re most welcome to attend our open rehearsal at Borgmästargatan 11, 7 pm.
Hope to see you there!
